ATV Service Requirements and Maintenance
It's the middle of autumn, winter is close, and for those, who enjoy spending time in the fresh air, it is the perfect
time for adventures with your ATV. Below you can find some
tips how to maintain your ATV, especially during the various seasons.
1.Liquid change
This is part of the mandatory ATV services, so try to include it in the preparation of the ATV for the winter. When, for example, you ride your machine off-road or in the woods, there is a risk of water penetrating your oil tank in your oil tank which can cause condensation from the temperature fluctuations.
However, should you decide to leave the water in the ATV, it can lead to premature wear and tear of the components of the machine. Hence, if you live in a cold climate the water can freeze and form ice, which in turn may lead to some serious mechanical issues. To avoid such situations, it is highly recommended to change your engine oil and gearbox oil frequently. If, by any chance, water gets in your tank, you would be able to see it since the oil will change to a white color.
2.Lubricate the engine
The lubrication system - this is an important step in the preparation of your ATV for the winter. You may wonder why the amount of engine oil is strictly defined, and why engine parts are flooded in oil. The amount of oil is at the bottom of the engine, leaving the upper parts, cylinders, pistons and rings in a dry state, which can lead to corrosion. To service the engine first, remove the air filter and start the machine. Second, inject oil directly into the carburetor suction openings. Finally, you'll see that reducing the engine revs will cause a lot of smoke. Nevertheless, you need higher revs to press the gas, so the engine can run long enough for the oil to cover all the details.
3.Remove the battery
Storing the battery in cold weather without proper maintenance can lead to failure. To extend the battery life of your ATV for at least several seasons, you must remove it from the machine and keep it in a warm room. It is advisable to store the battery on a shelf or on a wooden stand on the floor. To keep the battery running, you need to top charge it every other month. SigmasTek batteries can be stored for up to 6 months at 77ºF and then a freshening charge is required. For higher temperatures the time interval is shorter.
4.Fuel treatment
Adding the stabilizer to the fuel before the winter starts will help prevent gasoline from drying out in the carburetor and blocking it. This simple procedure can save you a lot of time and money in the coming spring. Which is why, before your last use, make sure to fill the required amount of stabilizer in the tank. If you do not travel with your ATV, just start the engine for a few minutes.
